BOTOX® Cosmetics, a popular remedy for wrinkles and frown lines, is administered by tiny injections into specific muscles of the face which result in immobilization of those muscles which actually cause the wrinkling in the skin above them. During the months following injection (usually 3-6) the skin will smooth out, wrinkle lines will diminish or disappear. Although the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetics treatment are temporary, repeating the injections every few months will prevent the wrinkles from re-appearing. Thus, BOTOX® Cosmetics functions as a method of prevention as well as correction for wrinkles. The "ideal" patients for this treatment have upper facial expression lines, such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crows feet. This treatment is not effective for wrinkles in the middle and lower portions of the face or around the mouth. The treatment takes only a few minutes with the effect occurring at approximately 2 - 5 days following the injections. BOTOX® Cosmetics may be re-injected as mobility begins to return to the affected muscles. There have been no reports of permanent damage caused by BOTOX. On rare occasions, the needle may puncture a small blood vessel causing temporary bruising or swelling at the injection site or into the upper eyelid. BOTOX® Cosmetics, administered carefully in low doses, is a purified form of botulinum toxin which was initially developed for treatment of certain eye conditions and is being used as a treatment for migraine headaches.
